TRAFFIC & PLANNING
The Traffic and Planning department handles two key functions: providing support services for our advertisers and planning each day's newspapers.
Traffic Central
Traffic Central is the hub for handling ads. Each ad that comes in from Advertising goes through an intake process in Traffic Central, ensuring that all order information is correct, that the ad is on time, meets production specifications, and has all necessary artwork, text and instructions. Traffic Central is also responsible for making sure that advertisers get proofs of their ads prior to publication and tearsheets once the ad has been published. Traffic Central drivers pick up and drop off materials as needed, as does a walker in the downtown core area.
Makeup and Scheduling
Creating two newspapers from scratch every Monday through Saturday, as well as a large Sunday newspaper, takes a lot of careful planning. The Makeup and Scheduling specialists position all the advertisements in the newspapers and allocate space to the newsrooms using precise formulas. Their job includes determining the size of each section, color placement, and, in conjunction with the pressroom, the press layout for each run. The end result is a "dummy" of each newspaper, essentially a sketch of each page showing ad placement and news space. Copies are provided to Prepress to insure correct placement of ads and to the newsrooms so they know how much news space is available on each page.
They are also responsible for NWclassified pagination. This process involves positioning all NWclassified display ads and all NWclassified liner ads, then releasing the pages to Page Production.
